“I feel proud of all I have achieved for the company and for myself”.

Ian Scott – Service Manager

My Leadership Journey with New Level Results.

I was a newly appointed service manager at Moray East which at the time was the biggest wind farm in the Vestas fleet.
Whilst I had been relatively successful in my development to get to this position it had been through a less structured approach.

My challenges were numerous, however I have highlighted some of the biggest:

• Largest site in the company and largest team to manage.
• The site was several hundred miles from my home, so away from home a lot due to travel.
• I inherited a high turnover of staff.
• I was not a very confident manager due to what I think was imposter syndrome.
• Staff survey showed low engagement and below company average on all scores, indicating low morale.
• My mindset or thinking was ‘how to be an effective leader’ and I was not convinced that I could be.

When my manager offered his team individual leadership coaching from New Level results, I jumped at the opportunity.

Working with my coach we designed a one page plan that represented all the leadership skills I needed to work on to succeed in my new role; more importantly my non-work life was also prioritised. My coach took time to get to know me and the challenges I faced. We focused on my personal values and how well I lived them. We also created a set of leadership principles to help me make better leadership decisions and what was interesting to me was working on my limiting paradigm, realising, I never thought of myself as a strong and capable leader.

Sitting here in September 2024, I am able to reflect on what has been nothing short of an incredible journey.

I am really pleased with my fitness level; Whilst I haven’t achieved my original goal of cycling 400km in one outing, my fitness overall has massively improved. I have also realised the positive effect my fitness has had on my ability to perform well at home and at work.

Safety on site (a key measure for our business) has improved significantly on last year, which is down to the proactive approach I have taken with my team and the way they have implemented key tasks such as, site safety walks, emergency drills etc.

Employee engagement in my team has seen a huge improvement, measured by the staff surveys and is now well above the company average.

The simple steps of planning my family time as much as I plan work time has meant that my family have had more quality time together in the last 12 months. The impact of this cannot be underestimated.

I have been successful in securing a senior position in Vestas as a platform specialist . I have taken this specific role to increase my business knowledge, adding new skills and understanding of the complexities of working in such a diverse business. I have taken this career decision as I firmly believe it will prepare me for the future and a more senior role in Vestas.

Finally, and most importantly, my confidence as a leader has improved dramatically since I started working with my coach, I firmly believe I am a strong, confident and capable leader. This has been backed up on numerous occasions from feedback from my peers and my team.
